Do you and your feline buddy live in an apartment? Cats don’t mind living in small spaces. They’re also quite clean and at least somewhat quiet, so it’s no wonder that they are so favored among apartment dwellers. A Bloomington, CA vet offers a few tips on caring for a kitty in an apartment below.
Vertical Space
Do you have a small space? Offer your furry friend some vertical space, such as a cat tower, cat shelves, or cat walks. You can also get a space-saving scratching post. Or, make your own by attaching a carpet tile to a smooth piece of wood. Nail it to the wall, just over Fluffy’s head.
Litterboxes
A litterbox does make it easy to care for Fluffy. You’ll never have to run home to let your kitty out, or hire a cat walker. However, your feline pal’s powder room isn’t exactly an attractive centerpiece. It can also be, well, a bit stinky. Look into getting an attractive litterbox enclosure. Setting out some pet-safe plants will also help. Plants make great air purifiers! Check the ASPCA site here for suggestions.
Entertainment
Kitties need enrichment and stimulation to thrive. Make sure Fluffy has lots of fun toys, and take time to play with her daily.
Window View
Cats are very curious, and they love to observe what is going on in their kingdoms.Offer your furry buddy window seat with a good view. This way, Fluffy can combine three of her favorite activities: napping, sunbathing, and staring at things.
Avoiding High-Rise Syndrome
Speaking of windows, you may have heard of high-rise syndrome. Contrary to what the name suggests, this isn’t exactly a syndrome, in the usual sense: it’s a set of specific injuries and medical issues that happen to cats that have fallen from high places. Make sure that your windows and screens close securely. This is important even—and perhaps especially—if you live on a ground floor.
Veterinary Care
Fluffy will still need to see her veterinarian regularly, even if she stays indoors. We strongly recommend spay/neuter surgery and microchipping. You’ll also need to keep up with your furry pal’s exams, vaccines, and parasite control products. Ask your vet to recommend an appointment schedule.
