7 Ways To Keep Your Pet From Getting Lost

June 1 2022

Lost Pet Prevention Month is in June! This is an important topic and a sad one. As many as one in three pets are stolen or lost at some point over the course of their lives. That’s a pretty heart-breaking statistic. While we hope all of our patients are safe and sound at home, this is one area where taking precautions pays off. Here, a vet lists some ways to keep your beloved pet from getting lost.

Keep Kitty In

While Fluffy may have a knack for leaving dusty pawprints on your car or ignoring you when you call her, she’s always safer inside. Keeping your kitty in doesn’t only reduce the chances of her getting lost: it also keeps her safe from hazards like cars, weather, and other animals.

Train Fido

Fido should know basic obedience commands, such as Heel, Come, Sit, Stay, and Lay Down. This is really important, as that training can help keep your pooch from getting away if you drop his leash or if he slips out the door.

Secure Yard

Fido has quite a craving for adventure, and is not above sneaking out to go exploring. Make sure you have secure fencing, so your pooch can’t go over, under, or through it. We also recommend getting a self-latching gate.

Spay/Neuter

Pets that haven’t been fixed are at greater risk of being lost, as they often want to go on the prowl, looking for love. If your furry pal is intact, make that appointment ASAP.

Use Leashes

Even if Fido is well-trained, it’s always best to keep him leashed whenever you take him off your property. Better safe than sorry!

Vigilance

Lost pet reports tend to increase significantly at certain times. Two of the biggest concerns are July 4th and New Years’ Eve, when fireworks blasts frighten many pets, causing them to run away in fear. Thunderstorms can also scare our furry pals. Be really careful at these times!

GPS Collars

This is a fairly new technology, and we’re thrilled to see it. There are different types of these, so be sure to do some research before purchasing one. You’ll always want to look at reviews, of course, but it’s also important to check your options for subscription fees and perks.
