Things That Would Happen If Pets Grew Thumbs

March 1 2024

Here at Valley Animal Hospital, we enjoy commemorating all of the pet-related holidays on the calendar. March boasts one of the cutest and silliest holidays of the year, If Pets Had Thumbs Day. As you may be aware, many scientists credit mankind’s opposable thumbs with the evolutionary leap that propelled us from the caveman era to civilization. What do you think would happen if Fido and Fluffy suddenly developed thumbs? We obviously can’t ask them, but we have a pretty solid idea. (Spoiler: mischief.). A local Rialto, CA veterinarian offers some petucated guesses in this article.

Go For A Joy Ride. Or Ten

Man’s Best Friend has a strong sense of adventure, so it’s understandable that he’d want to explore. Your canine companion may go let all of his canine friends out of their homes before heading to a park, pet store, or beach. A cross-country road trip to every dog park in the country may seem lavish, but it is not impossible.

Cats, of course, are not particularly fond of automobile rides. Fluffy may simply decide to toss your keys into the nearest lake, river, or pond. She may also become more creative with the paw painting she leaves on windshields and begin using actual paint for her creations. (Hopefully, she’d opt for something you could wash off, but we wouldn’t bet on it.)

Throw The Vacuum Cleaner Away

While dogs and cats might not always agree, they are usually on the same page when it comes to vacuum cleaners. You’d most likely locate that domestic item on the side of the road.

Lock Each Other Out

Cats and dogs sometimes get along quite well. They can also create strong bonds. However, they can get envious of one another. We wouldn’t exactly be shocked if Fido and Fluffy were to lock each other out.

Bombard You With Text Messages

Many comedy websites have produced hilarious series of fictitious texts between dogs, cats, and their humans. We wouldn’t put this past Fido or Fluffy!

Send You Love Letters

Sometimes we can’t help but make fun of our animal pals and their goofy actions. However, at the end of the day, pets are highly emotional, and form very strong attachments to their humans. You might find a beautiful note from your beloved pet!

Cancel All Their Veterinary Appointments

We recognize that animal clinics can be frightening for pets: the odd setting, unfamiliar odors, and scents of other worried pets, some of whom may be ill, can understandably put pets on edge. We do everything we can to make appointments easier for our furry patients.

However, we have yet to successfully explain to them the importance of proper veterinarian care for their health and well-being.

In other words, we may notice that our appointment calendars here at your Rialto, CA  animal clinic suddenly started growing increasingly empty. This applies to grooming, too. If you take your four-legged friend to a groomer, the salon may also experience a surge in cancellations.

Start A Social Media Battle (Or Not)

Social networking can be both a blessing and a curse. It’s an excellent method to stay in touch with friends and family who you don’t see very often. However, it can also be a double-edged sword.

Fido may keep himself entertained by viewing charming films or clips of squirrels. Fluffy may well decide to become an internet troll. Then again, we may have that one backwards. Who knows?

Scratch All Those Itches

It’s super cute to see pets close their eyes in relief when you help them get that bothersome region they can’t reach. Your pet may instantly begin trying with various objects that may allow them to scratch more effectively. Pets could easily commandeer a back scratcher, but we wouldn’t rule out them using forks, spatulas, or other impromptu objects as well.

Ransack Absolutely Every Inch Of The House

While Fido and Fluffy don’t always see eye to eye, we suspect they would join forces on this one. In other words, both our canine and feline pals would probably raid the cupboards. And the closets. And the pantries.

Of course, our canine and feline pets may have various motivations for this. Fido would naturally be on the prowl for food and would eagerly sample everything in the house before falling into a food coma.

Cats, in particular, enjoy investigating various nooks, crannies, and boxes. It wouldn’t be out of character for Fluffy to empty your drawers, hide anything valuable, and then take the labels off your canned foods, just to be a jerk. She’d also raid every drawer and closet in the house before taking a nap in the midst of the devastation. Cats will be cats!

Snap Lots Of Selfies

Fido and Fluffy are both quite photogenic. Your furry friends may be filling up your phone’s gallery with cute and funny selfies.

Take Over Your Computer

This one would necessitate that pets not only grow thumbs, but also learn basic computer skills. However, this may not be as farfetched as it appears. After all, Fluffy may have spent years attempting to learn by osmosis by sleeping on warm keyboards and laptops.

What would happen if your pet hacked into your computer? Fido would definitely download images of cute dogs, fire hydrants, and parks. Fluffy would destroy your data, install an aquarium screensaver, and then change your passwords.

Try Playing Video Games

Dogs and cats may very well desire to explore electronic games. After all, Fido and Fluffy are hunters by nature. Fido may like Grand Theft Auto, Duck Hunt, and Frogger, while Fluffy may enjoy Pacman, Tetris, or Space Invaders.

Then, she could be perfectly pleased with her present games. You can actually download games for your cat to play on a smartphone or tablet. Several of our feline friends appear to enjoy ‘catching’ digital mice, fish, or bubbles even without thumbs.

Online Shopping Spree

If your furry friend could order stuff by themselves, you may find your porch covered in boxes and your bank account draining rapidly.   As to what your pet would purchase?

We have a few guesses on this one. Kitties would probably order a variety of kitty furniture, as well as smoked salmon, live betta fish, catnip, spider plants, kitty shelves, cat enclosures, beds, boxes, scratching posts, beds, cat food, and cat snacks. She’d also likely order some random items, just so she could have the boxes.

Fido, on the other hand, would likely be more interested in food and toys. You may find your pet ordering food from, well, anywhere. He would most likely be on your porch or doorway, signing up for every food club, toy, and puppy subscription box he could find. You may also find things like dog houses, kiddie pools, and sandboxes being delivered. If your canine buddy  is a friendly, social type of pooch, he might even try to order himself a puppy!
