Yorkie Day

August 2 2022
It’s Yorkie Day! While these cute little dogs may be small, they have big personalities and are hugely admired. Read on as a vet shines a spotlight on these charming little pups below.

Basic Concept

Yorkie is one of the smallest dog breeds, rarely exceeding 8 inches in height. Like many small dogs, they have a long lifespan: these little dogs can live up to 16 years. That’s a lot for a dog! In terms of temperament, they are very cuddly and affectionate. However, they can get a little wound up. Fido makes a great little watchdog, because he lets you know there’s someone at the door. However, he also thinks everyone is his best friend. Yorkies tend to bark more than other dogs, so if you want a calm dog, this may not be the best choice for you.

Care

When it comes to grooming, Yorkies don’t shed or drool much. However, because they have long, silky coats, they need daily brushing. As they say, you can’t have it all!

Temperament

Yorkies are quite intelligent and generally quite easy to train. These guys are quite active and need plenty of playtime and stimulation. However, they are prone to separation anxiety and feel very lonely when left alone. You might want to find a friend for Fido.

Health

Yorkies are prone to certain specific health problems, such as bronchitis, cataracts, and skin problems. They are also known to have sensitive bellies, so you will need to be careful with what you feed Fido. It’s also important to note that, because they’re so small, Yorkies can get seriously injured when they fall: even falling off a bed or couch can cause injury! They are also a bit clumsy. Ask your veterinarian for specific care advice.

Fun facts

Fido has had a few nicknames over time. Yorkies are sometimes called Tomboy Toys, due to their bold and aggressive demeanor. They were also once called the broken-haired Scotch Terrier, which honestly sounds a bit sad.

Famous Yorkies

There have been a few famous Yorkies. First we have Sylvia, the smallest dog in recorded history. This little dog is only 2.4 inches tall! Another notable Yorkie is Smoky, a World War II hero. Of course, we think all Yorkies deserve to be celebrated.       We are committed to providing impeccable and excellent veterinary care. Contact us anytime!
